Read on to find out how deep heat wellness can benefit your fitness and health routine.

Whether you’re looking to support recovery, improve relaxation, boost circulation, or simply enjoy some well-deserved self-care, now is the perfect time to try an Infrared Sauna session at The Body Refinery studio in New Farm.

1. What is an Infrared Sauna?

While most of us have likely heard of, or experienced, a traditional steam sauna, Infrared Saunas can offer additional health benefits.

Unlike steam saunas that use boiling water to create steam, heating the air around you, Infrared Saunas use gentle infrared light energy to warm the body directly at a lower, more comfortable temperature.

Infrared heat creates a deeply relaxing experience while supporting the body’s natural detoxification and recovery processes. Many people also enjoy the cardiovascular benefits created by the gentle warming effect on the body.

Infrared heating means you don’t experience the additional humidity that accompanies the steam sauna heating method. Infrared saunas don’t induce the difficulty in breathing that many people associate with traditional steam saunas.

2. Benefits of Infrared Sauna Therapy

Anti-Inflammatory Support

Infrared Sauna sessions may help reduce inflammation in the body and support muscle recovery. This makes it a popular option for active individuals, athletes, or anyone experiencing everyday aches and tension. It can be an ideal addition to your weekly routine, to complement existing exercise or treatment bookings. It’s the perfect option to schedule on your ‘rest day’ between classes, or after a physiotherapy or remedial massage appointment.

Supports Cardiovascular Health

The warming effects of infrared heat naturally increase circulation and heart rate, creating a gentle cardiovascular effect. With regular use, Infrared Sauna therapy may also support weight management goals.

Promotes Better Sleep

Infrared Sauna therapy activates the parasympathetic nervous system. Unlike the sympathetic nervous system (known for ‘fight or flight’ reactions), the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activates when you feel safe, playing a vital role in rest and recovery.

Using an Infrared Sauna can help your body move into a calm and relaxed state. Many clients report feeling more rested, and sleeping better, after regular sessions, in addition to experiencing the other recovery benefits.

Healthy, Glowing Skin

Sweating is one of the body’s natural methods of detoxification. Infrared Sauna therapy may help reduce toxin buildup while supporting collagen production for healthier-looking skin.

3. What to Expect During Your First Infrared Sauna Session

Our Infrared Sauna sessions are 45 minutes long, but you are welcome to shorten your session at any time, depending on your comfort level.

Whether you book a session to unwind or recover after a workout anytime is a great time to enjoy the benefits of infrared heat therapy.

Here are a few tips to help you get the most from your experience:

  • Stay well hydrated before and during your session
  • Avoid applying personal care products before your appointment so your skin can sweat freely
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing
  • Bring a change of clothes for afterwards if desired
  • Avoid wearing jewellery, as heat may tarnish metals

We provide towels for your comfort, and clients may choose to wear a towel, bathing suit, or undergarments during the session.

As a standard, we preheat the sauna to 65°; however, this can be altered during the session to your liking. It’s advisable for you to request a lower temperature for your first session.

Different temperatures, timeframes and light colours are all available, and can be tailored to your preference or Infrared Sauna goals.

Your safety in the sauna is of the highest priority, so there’s also an emergency button installed that alerts our Front Desk team to any distress.

4. After Your Sauna Session

To maximise the benefits of your sauna experience:

  • Wait at least 15 minutes before showering if possible to allow your skin to continue the detoxification process
  • When you do shower, use a cool to warm temperature rather than very hot water
  • Avoid soaps, shampoos, or moisturisers immediately after your session, as they may block freshly opened pores
  • Keep up the hydration afterwards, and avoid excessive alcohol consumption

Our studio also offers modern private shower facilities for your convenience.

5. Considerations

Health professionals have been using infrared technology for years, and it’s considered safe for many individuals. However, Infrared Sauna is not recommended if you are pregnant, have uncovered wounds or abrasions, or are experiencing gastroenteritis, nausea, vomiting, or stomach flu symptoms.

Individuals who have implants of any kind, suffer from cardiovascular or chronic conditions, and/or are taking prescription drugs are advised to consult with their primary care physician before use.

Additional details and matters you must consider before using an Infrared Sauna are located on our Infrared Sauna page and in the waiver at our front desk.
