Pretty much everyone loves a massage, and while a gentle massage can leave you feeling relaxed, there are far greater health benefits that can be achieved through massage. Remedial Massage is treatment oriented, and having regular remedial massages does more than relax you and improve your circulation. Here are four additional reasons to include regular Remedial Massages in your health and wellbeing regime.
- Decrease Pain
Massage can ease pain in several different ways. Specifically, massage increases blood flow to sore, stiff joints and muscles, which are warmed by the extra circulation that flushes out muscle toxins and waste. However, some studies have also confirmed that massage also triggers the release of natural painkillers called opioids in the brain, and increases the flow of oxytocin, a hormone that relaxes muscles and encourages feelings of calmness and contentment.
- Improve Flexibility and Joint Mobility
Whether you spend a lot of time sitting or exercising, fibrous adhesions are forming around your joints and in your muscles either because of no use or misuse. If you remain inactive for long periods of time the muscle fibres are laid down incorrectly as they adapt to its specific environment. While during exercise you create lots of little tears in the muscle fibres (which is what builds muscle), but if left with poor circulation these little tears also result in the formation of scar tissue. Remedial Massages are a manual way of breaking up the scar tissue and adhesions that have been developing in and on your muscles. With Remedial Massage, you will be able to preserve and even increase your muscle flexibility and joint mobility.
- Help you sleep
Massage can reduce fatigue and improve sleep. Studies, gathered by the American Massage Therapy Association show that massage increased the time spent in a deep and restful sleep. Studies have showed that massage directly affects the production of serotonin, which is essential for the production of melatonin the sleep hormone. Participants in the studies had 2 x 30 minute massages a week for 5 weeks and had increased serotonin levels compared to the control group who had no massage. Massage is a drug free option to poor sleeping patterns, so if you are having sleep problems a good regular massage may be the place to start to improve your sleep.
- Improve Immunity, Inflammation and Mental Health
In a study done at Cedars Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles, researchers found that people who received a 45minute massage had an increased number of lymphocytes (the white blood cells that play a large roll in immunity). The study also found that participants had lower levels of cytokines, which are molecules that play a role in inflammation. Chronically high levels of inflammation are known to be associated with conditions such as asthma, cardiovascular disease and depression. In the same study, massage was also found to have had an impact on participants’ hormone levels. Receiving a massage decreased levels of cortisol, a stress hormone and vasopressin, a hormone believed to play a role in aggressive behaviour, according to the researchers.
Make Remedial Massage a regular part of your health routine and feel the benefits of relaxation, improved circulation, decreased pain, improved flexibility and mobility, improved sleep and immunity. If an hour of treatment can do that much for you, why wouldn’t you do it frequently and regularly?
